To upgrade or not upgrade that is the question for Dynamics GP

It is the belief in some businesses using Dynamics GP currently that if the system is working fine why change it?

However, it is also important to understand that this decision may also not be the correct one.

Even if it is the case where your business is not having any problems currently with your Dynamics GP system, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t missing out on extra features via an upgrade.

For example, you need to ask yourself the following:

  • Does your business get the very most out of your current system?
  • Should your current system be streamlined to improve your overall efficiency?
  • What potential problems could you face by staying on an older version of Dynamics GP?

In our latest blog article, we will take you through whether or not your business should or should not upgrade your Dynamics GP solution.

Ok, I would like to stay on my current Dynamics GP version and not upgrade, what will happen?

You won’t have the latest regulatory updates

To put this into context with an example, you will find that the latest payroll tax and end-of-year updates that help to guarantee that filings are accurate and meet legislation won’t be available if you aren’t keeping your GP system up to scratch and up to date. The question you need to ask yourself here is how much time will you waste having to find the solution to allow you to make these adjustments yourself?

Your GP system will not be fully protected

If your business is on Microsoft’s extended support plan (used for versions over 5 years old), you will be able to get the latest security updates for Dynamics GP, however you will find that your version of GP won’t be 100% guaranteed compatible with the latest versions of Windows and SQL servers.

Additional expenditure

In the short term, you will find that you save quite a bit of money. However, if you then do decide to upgrade at a later date you will end up having to spend more money. It goes without saying but moving from a single version of Dynamics GP to the next one is relatively straightforward. However, if you choose to wait for a few more versions before upgrading then this could cause problems as there will be many more changes to both the overall user experience and the overall platform itself which will essentially cost you so much more. Small upgrades require less effort and make it easier for your employees to make the transition to the newer version.

What benefits will I gain from upgrading my Dynamics GP solution?

You will always have an up-to-date system

By having an upgrade plan in place, you will be rest assured that you will be getting all the latest bug fixes, security updates and are guaranteed to remain compatible with other Microsoft products as they are updated.

You will always have the most up-to-date functionality & compliance data

This will enable you to maximise the return on your investment in Dynamics GP as you can use the latest functionality and ensure that you are fully compliant with the latest regulations.

You will have a system that is fully compatible with all of your third party add on products

You may find that your business is making use of a whole host of third-party add ons to take care of certain aspects of your day-to-day business functions or you may be looking to extend your GP solution further. If you are on the latest version of Dynamics GP, you will be happy to learn that everything works as it should and you will be taking advantage of all aspects of the newer version.

You will be able to keep upgrade costs in check

Don’t cause your business a headache by choosing bigger upgrades when your system forces you to do just that, keep your business moving forwards and upgrading regularly to ensure that your business doesn’t have to rush things.
