Microsoft has revealed that as of October 10th 2023, they will no longer be supporting Windows Server 2012/2012 R2. Put simply, this means that Microsoft will not be providing security updates or non-security patches, bug fixes or technical support to these users. This means that your business could be at risk of security vulnerabilities and the software will become increasingly unstable.
It is therefore of the utmost importance that you make the switch sooner rather than later. Making the move before the official end of support date will allow you to make sure that your compliance processes are maintained and can help to protect your business from any emerging security gaps.
Microsoft has also stated that “SQL Server and Windows Server run many business pivotal applications that could take longer than you think to upgrade”. Therefore, if your business is in the position where you need certain applications to continue to run to maintain the smooth running of your business, you need to take steps to plan for this migration to take place as soon as possible to stop any issues occurring in their tracks.
I currently use Windows Server 2012/2012 R2, what are my available options?
Option 1
The first option is to upgrade from Windows 2012 to a later version with the preferred option being Windows Server 2022. This will help to ensure that your business is receiving the very latest updates and security updates to keep your systems running effectively and efficiently without any fear of becoming the victim of a potential cyber-attack.
Option 2
The second option is moving your server into Microsoft’s premier cloud solution, Microsoft Azure to gain an extra three years of extended security updates at no extra cost to your business. This is the perfect option for those that are looking to move to the Cloud as part of their digital transformation strategy and can help your business to save money in the long term.
